Born 30-3-1928 : Died 16-1-1957

This page is about my dad I wanted to remember him in my own special way, who died as a result of a very tragic accident he was 2nd Assistant Baker on board the Union Castle Line Mail Ship "Pretoria Castle". I only wish he were still alive because I never had the chance to grow up with him,

He went swimming in the sea along with a James Arthur Dunn a young lad who was on his first sea trip but unfortunately both did not survive as the very strong undercurrent took them both by surprise and they drowned on Wednesday 16th January 1957. Durban, South Africa . I was about 15 months old when he died so I never really got to know him as I was growing up but I can remember my mum telling me that when we used to live in a block of flats on the 3rd floor that we had a window box and I used to climb up onto the window ledge open the window and climb out onto this window box with my feet dangling over the edge waiting for my dad to come home, it was quite frightening for my mum and looking back at it yes I suppose it was and quite funny.

Below is further information about the accidental drowning and photograph's of the funeral that took place in 'Block "L L" Stellawood Cemetery, Natal on 18th Jan 1957'.

This was reported in the Southern Evening Echo dated 17-1-1957
